📜Palaeographic Transcription📜
Palaeography is the study of old handwriting. It can be found in a wide range of historical and personal documents, which may require transcription, including:
Manuscripts & Letters – Correspondence from past centuries in old scripts
Parish Records – Baptisms, marriages, and burials from church registers
Wills & Probate Records – Testamentary documents detailing inheritance and family connections
Court Records – Legal proceedings, witness statements, and verdicts
Land & Property Deeds – Ownership records, leases, and agreements
Military Records – Service records, muster rolls, and pension applications
Guild & Apprenticeship Records – Documents related to trade memberships and training
Medieval & Early Modern Texts – English or Latin texts from archives and libraries
Old Family Letters – Personal correspondence passed down through generations
Business & Trade Records – Account books, inventories, and commercial transactions
Medical & Hospital Records – Patient records, casebooks, and treatment logs
I provide palaeographic and document transcription services, ensuring accuracy in official historical records and challenging personal documents. This has been developed through specialised training in palaeography. You will be provided with a transcription using the semi-diplomatic convention, including notes to explain any unusual words and line breaks and spellings as found in the original text. An estimated price will be given on receipt of the text, and you will be regularly updated about my progress. No additional work will be carried out without your prior agreement.
Research is evidence-based, and all conclusions are clearly supported by documentary references. Where uncertainty remains, this is explained transparently. Any work requested will begin with a free, no obligation, consultation to determine the validity of the project and provide you with an estimate of cost and timescale. On occasion it may not be possible to identify individuals by available records. You will be informed as soon as possible if this occurs and all work will be paused until we agree on the next steps. This is explained in full in the Terms and Conditions. Certified copies of Birth, Marriage and Death certificates, where possible, can be provided (if requested) for Civil Registrations, at an additional cost as set by the General Register Office (currently £12.50 for a physical copy or £8 for a PDF image where available). Wills and probate records can be purchased (where applicable) for the current cost of £16. Images of Census and Parish Records will be included according to Copyright Laws. Please see the Terms and Conditions for more details.
